Our First Heroes
The story of Hope Haven’s creation
Early in 1991, members of the Business and Professional Women’s Club of Harrisonville, MO attended a workshop on domestic violence. In that workshop, these women learned about the lasting impact of domestic violence on families and communities. At that point, Cass County and many surrounding rural counties were without a shelter for battered women and their children. The workshop made such a profound impact on these women, that they vowed to create a place where the members of our community who have been devastated by domestic and/or sexual violence could be given the tools to start a new life free from abuse.
The Business and Professional Women’s club took on the monumental task of creating a safe place to serve those affected by domestic and sexual abuse in the Cass County and the surrounding areas. Through their determination and drive, a meeting was held in April of 1992 which was attended by over 120 concerned Cass County citizens. From that meeting and the hard work of the Women’s club, Hope Haven was born.
Hope Haven’s first Board of Directors was established in January 1993 and groundbreaking for their facility to house sexually and domestically abused women and their children began on June 5, 1994. Hope Haven opened its doors on August 1, 1995. Since its inception, over 16,000 survivors have been served. It is the philosophy of Hope Haven and their Board of Directors that all individuals have the right to a life free from abuse.
Today, Hope Haven needs the continued help and support of our community. There are many ways you can get involved to help: Donate on this website, volunteer, host an event to support Hope Haven, donate food, clothing, personal care and household items and host presentations to educate our community on the impact of domestic and sexual violence.
